PAVILION DUSUN
A client approached us to design an extension for her retirement in the future.
The brief from the client is simple - to provide a large bedroom with ensuite that fits a queen size bed and single bed for maid, and an extra bedroom/ storage area.
The site for the extension is a spacious green area at the rear of a bungalow, where the dry & wet kitchen is overlooking at. The original study room on ground floor is spacially insufficient to be converted as a decent bedroom for retirement.
Upon carrying out a thorough site study, looking at the constraints and potentials, followed by a detail discussion with the client, a "Pavilion" is proposed as below:
-
Universal design is a prerequisite as new spaces are for retirement; the gradient of the passageway ramp to the dimensions of the master bedroom and bathroom comply to universal design requirements;
-
for cost-effective solution, hacking works are avoided by not disrupting the programs of the existing house, especially from the kitchens with tiled walls;
-
the views to the outdoors from the kitchens are maintained, these spaces are remained well-lit naturally;
-
the new bedrooms are connected with ensuite, adjoined with a patio fronting a green space, ie. Courtyard. It is embraced by a ventilated wall, a ventilated passageway that connects the new Pavilion to the existing house;
-
The New Courtyard, which allows the owner to plant vegetables/ flowers, where owner can view from the new Patio & existing kitchens (a strategic biophilic approach for well-being of occupants);
-
East facing perforated wall & west facing perforated passageway filter morning and evening sun, while enable light to infiltrate into the courtyard;
-
another layer of timber screens divides the new patio into outdoor & indoor space, further filters the lights into patio & bedrooms
The architecture of pavilion emulates and captures the essence, proportion and colour tones of the original design of the bungalow, while incorporating contemporary materials onto it, resulting a coherent design to entire built form of the house.
